The informative Hyperallergic blog posts this interesting analysis on Jules Olitski and Anthony Caro. They met while teaching at Bennington College and their dialogue includes this by Olitski:

‘Well, Tony, what I would like for my painting is, let’s say, just a cloud of color that remains there transfixed.’” The conversation prompted Olitski to experiment with a commercial paint sprayer instead of the rollers he had used for several years, a change that resulted in the lush, mysterious paintings now synonymous with his name. 

Olistski, and daughter Lauren, are featured in the book Abstract Painting: Concepts and Techniques.
