David Reed At Gagosian

At Gagosian Gallery in New York, David Reed will be presented through February 25, 2017:

Between 1974 and 1975, he prepared tall, vertical canvases, either as single panels or as many as five panels bolted together, to create canvases painted primarily with black or red strokes …

Reed’s work is discussed several times in Abstract Painting: Concepts and Techniques .

One such section: “An all-over structure of pictorial incidents (both gestural and geometric) creates an experience of extension–the picture extrapolates past its literal edges. The large scale of the work challenges our ability to see it in its entirety, and often we seem to see movement at the edge of our peripheral vision. This work challenges us to enter into a new optical space where distinctions between background and foreground shift.
