Here is an interesting article that delineates the members of the “Washington Color School.”
Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland and Gene Davis are several of the early proponents of the style, all of whom are included in the text of Abstract Painting: Concepts and Techniques.
“Thin it, use it in the same way as dye,” Noland later told an interviewer, in 1977. “Thinness reveals color.”
On a side note, the Corcoran Gallery of Art played an important part in exploring DC’s art innovation, but the demise of this institution is chronicled here.
